A man has been taken to hospital after a dinghy blown along a beach in a gale near Nelson struck him in the head.

The 4m alloy dinghy was on the beach at Torrent Bay in Abel Tasman National Park when it became airborne in high winds, flew through the air and struck the 71-year-old man from Takaka on Monday afternoon, a statement from Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter said.

The man suffered potentially serious head injuries. Bystanders cared for him at the scene, before the helicopter flew him to Nelson Hospital.
