Police have recovered the body of a teenage boy who jumped off a cliff into the Waikato River at Taupo.

A teenage boy who died after jumping off a cliff into the Waikato River at Taupo has been named by police.

He was 15-year-old David Paul Clark from Turangi, a year 12 student at Taupo-nui-a-Tia College.

David was at a popular spot on the river near Unison Park with friends on Thursday afternoon.

He and four friends had already jumped from a cliff into river, but on a second jump with two others about 4pm, David got into trouble and failed to resurface, police say.

His body was located about half an hour later but the police national dive squad from Wellington was required to safely recover it.

His body was brought to shore about 11pm on Thursday.

Senior Constable Barry Shepherd, who co-ordinated the search and rescue operation, praised the attempts by David's friends to help him.

"His two friends did a sterling job trying to get to him and should be commended for their efforts," he said.

"These boys were looking out for each other and being careful, but it shows once again how fun can turn to tragedy in an instant.

"It is easy to be caught unawares and I urge everyone, particularly enthusiastic youngsters, to take extra care."

Police say the spot where David died is popular with swimmers, but the current can be strong.
