Moo Moo's crossbow assailant comes forward

The teenager who says he fired the crossbow that went through Moo Moo the cat's skull told police he wasn't aiming at him.

Moo Moo had an extraordinarily lucky escape from death after the crossbow went through his skull, entering just above his eye and going right through, miraculously missing his brain.

Wellington police spokesman Nick Bohm says an 18-year-old Wainuiomata man has turned himself in to police, who have subsequently seized a crossbow along with other items.

"During his interview his explanation was that the cat walked into the path of the crossbow," Mr Bohm told NZ Newswire.

Police have yet to decide what charges should be laid, if any, but have been in touch with the SPCA.

They also hope to get in touch with Moo Moo's owner Donna Ferrari early next week before deciding on charges.

The penalty for wilful ill-treatment under the Animal Welfare Act carries a maximum jail term of five years or a fine of up to $100,000.

Moo Moo underwent surgery on Tuesday at Massey Veterinary Teaching Hospital to remove the arrow and is recovering well.
