A US golfer was impaled with a broken putter after an argument with fellow players on the green, according to reports.

The man, who has not been identified, was allegedly involved in the dispute between two groups of golfers on the 13th hole at Eagle Mountain Lake Resort, in Texas, just over a week ago, local TV news station My Fox 4 reports.

Tarrant County Sheriff's Department spokesman Terry Grisham said the argument broke out after a group of three golfers asked a group of four if they could pass ahead of them on the course as they were playing faster.

At least two of the men started fighting, during which the putter was broken and the sharp end impaled in the groin of the man, Mr Grisham said.

The injury ruptured the man's femoral artery.

"This guy is bleeding profusely. He just passed out, you need to get somebody out here now," one of the men can be heard saying in call to emergency services.

"We're holding his artery in our hands man, this guy's gonna go under," he says.

Investigators are trying to find out if the man was stabbed with the club or whether he was impaled by accident.

In the emergency phone call the man told the operator he had fallen on the club.
