Driver's 'drunk' journey caught on film

A car passenger in the US has filmed the nail-biting journey of a "drunk" driver who swerved into oncoming traffic numerous times before eventually losing control of the vehicle.

The driver is seen at the start of the video struggling to stay in the lane and gradually veering further onto the wrong side of the road.

The passenger filming urges his friend to put on his hazard lights to warn cars going in the other direction as the car in front zig-zags across the road in wet weather.

"I wish I was behind the wheel, I might take the guy out myself," the passenger said as he filmed.

"He's totally gone."

The man films the dangerous journey for more than four minutes, crying out at several near-misses, before the car in front smashes into a road barrier and swerves into the opposite lane.

The driver then speeds up and becomes more erratic before driving off the road into a ditch and hitting a tree.

It is believed the video was filmed in downstate Illinois.
