A US couple have been dubbed the worst fans in baseball after catching a foul ball and refusing to give it to a crying toddler next to them.

The incident happened in the eighth inning of yesterday's match between the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees in Arlington, Texas, sports news website deadspin.com reports.

Video shows Ranger right fielder Mitch Moreland tossing the ball into the stands in the direction of the toddler, who is sitting on his father's lap.

When the man next to him catches the ball, the disappointed toddler bursts into inconsolable tears.

To make matters worse the grinning man and his girlfriend, oblivious to the boy's distress, then pose for photographs with the ball.

Commentator Michael Kay was quick to voice his disgust at the couple.

"Oh my god, they can't give it to the kid that's awful," he said before chiding them for "rubbing it in the kid's face."

But the story did have a happy ending with another Ranger's fan seeing his distress and tossing him a ball.
