The pilot of a stunt plane that crashed into a golf course during an air show in Idaho on Friday night was lucky to escape the accident with just minor injuries.

Buck Roetman was flying his red Christen Eagle stunt plane at the annual Legacy Air Show in Rexburg when the plane went down.

He was performing stunts and rolling the plane when it suffered a propeller issue.

"Just guessing at this point but I lost some thrust. The engine was running but I believe it was a propeller issue," Mr Roetman told the Rexburg Standard Journal.

His $80,000 plane is likely to be written off but Mr Roetman was in good spirits after he was treated for a broken ankle.

"I apologise to the golfers about the divot I left," he said.

"Golfers are pretty touchy about that sort of stuff."
