A dog in the United States has begun nursing a litter of newborn kittens after their mother was killed.
Their owner Elbert Bristow, 84, of Columbia, Alabama, ran over the mother cat Kitty Kitty after returning home from a fishing trip last week, the Donathan Eagle reports.
Not long after Mr Bristow was surprised to find his white English bulldog Molly letting the four kittens feed from its own teats.
Molly was lactating after giving birth to three puppies the day before the kittens were born.
While it's not unknown for animals to adopt young from other species, it was still a big surprise for Mr Bristow.
"Really they’re natural enemies. Most dogs can’t stand cats," he said.
"I've had dogs all my life. I've trained bird dogs and coon dogs, but this is the first time I've ever had a dog take a litter of kittens."
He said he plans to keep only one of the kittens and one of the puppies.
