A potential thief in the US found himself in a compromising position when he became trapped midway through his crime.

Manuel Fernandes, 54, allegedly tried to break into a rental store, Rent-A-Center, via the storage bay in Brockton, Massachusetts, WTVR reports.

According to Brockton police, Fernandes tried to pry open the garage door with a bed post but when squeezed underneath the door fell on his head.

He was stuck for nearly nine hours before a store manager found him the next morning.

He suffered a large bruise on the back of his head from the pressure of the door and was sent to hospital.

Brockton police said they would charge Fernandes with breaking and entering and malicious damage to property.
