A morbidly obese gang member who allegedly tried to kidnap a US child on his way to soccer was later arrested after police spotted the man attempting to hide behind a fence.
Police in Santa Ana, California said 200 kilogram Victor Joseph Espinoza, 55, approached a 10-year-old boy and his cousin while they were walking to a local park on Friday, the Huffington Post reported.
Espinoza allegedly grabbed the boy by both arms but the child broke free and ran to tell his soccer coach.
The coach was unable to detain Espinoza, but his description of the unusual-looking suspect helped police find him, CBS Los Angeles reported.
"He grabbed the boy by the arm and he was smelling him," the coach, who wanted to remain anonymous, said.
Espinoza was arrested after infrared footage from a police helicopter showed him hiding under a tree in the garden of a nearby house.
Espinoza faces charges of false imprisonment and child annoyance as well as other gang-related charges.
