A groom in Brazil has died at his wedding reception after tripping onto a beer glass and cutting his femoral artery.

Fabio Jefferson Macial, 33, had been married to Geise Guimaraes just six hours before bleeding to death.

The freak accident happened at a beachside club in Rio de Janeiro, where the couple held their reception after tying the knot in a church ceremony.

Witnesses said Mr Macial was acting playfully with one of the young bridesmaids at 2am on Monday when he tripped and fell on his front.

A beer glass tucked into a trouser pocket shattered and somehow a shard struck severed his femoral artery in the top of his leg

He died from blood loss on his way to hospital, according to reports.

A friend of the couple said Mr Macial's wife is still in shock.

"She just cries and says 'I want my husband back'. Nobody can believe what happened, and even less the way it happened," the friend told Brazil's O Globo newspaper.

Mr Macial, a navy sergeant, had been planning the wedding since the start of the year and had even begun building a house for his bride-to-be, which was finished a week ago.

His funeral will be held tomorrow in his home city of Manaus, northern Brazil.
