Police in Canada were on the verge of storming a cinema fearing an Aurora-style shooting massacre after a mother received a chilling call from her daughter at the movies, punctuated by blood-curdling screams and a man shouting murderous threats.

Constable Mike Russell of the Victoria, British Columbia police said they had received a phone call from a mother who had just received an alarming call from her daughter but was unable to speak to her and was worried because of all the screaming she had heard.

"The mum picked up the phone and heard lots of screaming, running, threatening comments. She panicked and when she couldn't reach her daughter called 911," he said.

The girl was located at a nearby cinema and police were preparing to storm the building before a final call to the girl got through.

She explained that she was not being attacked by a killer but was watching the horror film Cabin in the Woods and the screams her mother heard were part of the film.

"She seems to have pocket dialled her mom at the worst part of the movie," Constable Russell said.

The spokesman said pocket dialling is a problem for police with growing numbers of people inadvertently dialling 911.

"We keep telling people, they've got to lock their phones," he said.
