A four-year-old boy from Colorado has survived a third-floor plunge after he toppled from the back of some furniture that had been moved while his mother was cleaning.

A four-year-old US boy has survived practically unharmed after he fell out of a third-floor apartment and landed on his feet.

Dylan Hayes reportedly somersaulted to the ground after he fell out of a window while his mother Jessica, was shampooing the carpets, CBS reports.

The boy had climbed onto a couch, which had been moved to the wall by his mother, to chat with downstairs neighbours.

"I fall ... really, really far," Dylan told CBS.

Jessica Hayes told CBS she was "terrified" as she didn't know what she was going to see when she raced downstairs.

"My mum was cleaning our fridge out when all of a sudden I heard screaming 'Dylan just went out the window'," Ms Hayes said.

Dylan was hospitalised for 20 hours, wearing a neck brace as a precaution.

His mother said she wished the danger had crossed her mind at the time, but that she felt "beyond lucky".

"It has gotten easier since it happened two weeks ago to not blame myself," she added.

The family, which moved out of their apartment, is in search of a new place to call home — on the ground level.
