Three people have been arrested and charged after allegedly taking a joyride on a stolen yacht in California.

A US trio who allegedly stole a yacht and stocked it with beer and pizza before going on a joyride were arrested on Monday after the vessel ran aground.

The 25m Darling yacht went missing from the Sausalito Yacht Harbour in Pacifica, California about 1.30am on Monday, the Palo Alto Daily News reports.

Leslie Gardner, 63, Dario Mira, 54, and Lisa Modawell, 56, were assisted from the yacht by police officers on jet skis after the boat came aground off Linda Mar State Beach early Monday morning.

They initially refused to get off the boat and a crowd of about 150 passers-by amassed to watch the scene unfold.

The trio have been charged with grand theft and conspiracy and are being held in jail.

It is believed there was pizza and beer found on board the boat but police have not yet confirmed these reports.

The boat's owner was reportedly at the scene but declined to comment to media.
